Turning Point Alcohol and Drug Centre has recently released figures about drug use in West Melbourne which show increases in “non-fatal” heroin overdoses and a “trend toward the use of polydrugs.” Cannabis is “the most common secondary drug among amphetamine, heroin and alcohol users.” Dr Lloyd, a researcher at the Centre suggests that cannabis could “heighten the effect from one particular drug, reduce the effects of withdrawal, bypass the negative effects of coming down from a substance used earlier or to obtain multiple concurrent drug effects.”
