This package is an educational resource incorporating a series of activities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander school-aged students, to encourage them to seek help for problems related to drug use and mental health. By seeking help early, young people are less likely to develop long-term problems as a result of mental health and drug use issues. Young people are reluctant to seek help from professionals and tend to keep their problems to themselves or turn to friends, parents or teachers for support &emdash; people who often don’t know what to do. This resource has been made specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islader young people in an attempt to provide culturally-appropriate and relevant information that these young people can relate to.
The package is made up of:
A teacher manual and clasroom activities
A staff and parent information session PowerPoint presentation
This resource was developed by the National Cannabis Prevention and Information Centre at the University of New South Wales. It was extensively focus-tested amongst Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and schools and has had input from the Centre’s National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Refernce Group.
