Unexpected Reasons You Might Be Craving Ice Cream

There might be an explanation for why you often find yourself yearning for a pint of ice cream. What’s the deal? Clinical nutritionist Kimberly Snyder shared with Everyday Health that one reason for this craving could actually be linked to our emotions. Many individuals have learned to view dessert, such as ice cream, as a reward, particularly after a challenging day or when a significant task has been completed. However, this habit can activate an addictive chemical in our body known as dopamine, which is responsible for making us feel good, Snyder explained.

In tough times, indulging in fatty foods like ice cream can provide comfort. You might notice you’re reaching for a pint of ice cream more frequently during periods of stress and anxiety. In these moments, “fat can feel stabilizing,” according to Amy Gorin, a registered dietitian nutritionist, who spoke to Everyday Health. When a food like ice cream feels heavy in your stomach, it can make you feel grounded and sometimes better overall, which is why we end up craving it repeatedly during difficult days. Nevertheless, these are not the only reasons you might be craving ice cream.

While it’s certainly fine to enjoy ice cream occasionally, it might be worth recognizing all the potential reasons behind your craving. According to Cosmopolitan, “Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like naproxen and Motrin are generally harmless, but they can actually cause some inflammation in the stomach, according to [Dr. Joseph Colella, a robotic/bariatric surgeon]. An ice cream craving could be your body’s way of expressing irritation—and a sign it needs a break.”

Additionally, you might be in need of more calcium or vitamin D in your diet. “Cheese and other dairy foods contain both nutrients, and it’s not uncommon to consume insufficient amounts of them,” the site noted. You might also find yourself craving ice cream because you’re feeling tired and need a bit of energy to get through the day. While it’s normal to have cravings for ice cream occasionally, you should consider consulting your doctor if you feel your cravings are excessive.
